Our Story

Gates and Bridges was founded by the founders of The Language Center, a reputable institution of excellence that has been in existence in Kenya since 1981 and is led by a team of highly experienced early childhood educators.

Gates and Bridges Academy was incorporated on May 31, 2020, at the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic. Motivated by the crisis and leveraging technology, the founders and leadership came together to combine their skills, expertise, and long experience to successfully set up and run the school to provide high quality, progressive early childhood education that is accessible to all - beyond the bounds of a physical location.

The school started by offering online and homeschooling classes and later set up a physical location, hence pioneering the blended approach to learning that caters to the specific need of each parent.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the Gates and Bridges Academy Montessori model look like?

You will find small, mixed-age classes that offer the chance for plenty of individual attention; an emphasis on community building, movement, and nature; immersive, hands-on, theme-based learning; field trips that take advantage of both the natural and cultural resources in the Nairobi communities; and, of course, opportunities for parent and family involvement. We truly believe that children learn better when their families are involved and invested in their educations, and we see school as both a connection to, and a widening of, the child’s home community and family experience.

Will my child have access to art, nature, and physical education?

Yes. We wholeheartedly believe that arts, nature, and movement are critical elements to educating the whole child. Arts are integrated holistically into the academic curriculum. Physical education takes place through outdoor play, movement classes, nature walks, or sports classes at the nearby recreation center (including swimming lessons). In addition, our curriculum is supplemented with frequent field trips to museums, theaters, and cultural centers.

What Do you offer?

We offer:

  • Kindergarten Daycare & Play group (Ages 1.5 to 3 Years)
  • Preschool (Ages 4 to 6 Years)
  • CBC system of education Grades 1 to 3 (Ages 6 to 8 Years)

How will we assess your child's progress?

We believe that many schools put too much emphasis on standardized testing, to the detriment of both the student and the educational experience. To assess progress, Gates and Bridges Academy parents can expect to receive a qualitative progress report at the end of each semester. Parents can also expect an open and communicative relationship with their teacher. We do use adaptive diagnostic tools to help us know where each child has learning challenges and strengths in reading and math.

How will students learn in a mixed-age classroom?

There are multiple benefits to a mixed-age classroom, which are discussed in detail here. In general, our teacher will teach to the entire class, scaling the actual classwork to the abilities of the individual students. For example, an older child might write a page-long essay about a work of art, whereas a younger child might write a few sentences. Math is the only class where lessons are differentiated by ability and taught in small groups or one-on-one.

How do I get my child admitted?
